More than 25 years experience in research and design has
led to the resurrection of the Darrius vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT),
which has many inherent
advantages over
other wind turbine designs.
VAWTs in General
The advantage of the VAWT is
its ability to take its wind from any direction, without having to
be orientated by yaw motors and gear trains.
It can
average the output power by its own mass inertia.
Low start up wind speeds
They do not
require a massive tower structure. This means that they can be of
lower overall height and located in sites where HAWTs are prohibited
The REI Darrieus
VAWT
The
generator and control equipment
are
at
ground level making maintenance of the
whole
system
much
easier.
No need to hire cherrypickers or to use hydraulic rams to drop the
mast and generator for repairs or maintenance.
Each
turbine has
a
direct driven VLS permanent magnetic alternator with no gearbox or
slip ring assembly
required
to
transmit the output power away from the nacelle
(rotor)
assembly.
No
gyroscopic stress on the hub assembly, as seen on HAWT machines,
as the aerofoils are orientated into the wind or out of the wind.
No
coning stress, as the wing assembly is the same distance from the
mast assembly at all times.
Very quiet.
Less than 45 db at 5 meters
Using the purpose designed lattice
tower located in its own excavated hole and then backfilled with
soil NO CONCRETE IS NEEDED FOR THE BASE.
This saves money and installation time and is much more
environmentally friendly.
