SOLAR WATER HEATING Q & A 's
HERE
Schuco are one of Europe's largest manufacturers of solar thermal
and photovoltaic modules. If you have a project - a single house or
swimming pool, a large industrial unit or office block , a
residential home or school - we can design and install a Schuco
system that meets the highest technical standards of performance and
efficiency.
ON-ROOF SOLAR
SYSTEM
HOW
THE SYSTEM WORKS.
In the UK the ideal
is for the solar collector panels to be facing due south and at an
angle between 30 and 65 degrees from horizontal. If your roof ridge
runs north/south a system of two panels can be used.
A central heating
pump forces water through a coiled pipe in the solar panel where it
is heated by the sun. The heated water then flows down and through a
second (lower) coil in your hot water cylinder, referred to as a
solar cylinder or twin-coil cylinder. The water flowing around the
solar system is used to heat the water in the cylinder indirectly.
This means that no water in the Solar Heating system will come into
contact with water in your hot water cylinder. The heat is
transferred, not the water.
The slightly cooled
water is then returned back to the solar panel via the pump. The
controller box continuously compares the temperature in the panel
against that in the hot water cylinder. The pump is switched on when
the water temperature in the panel is hotter than the water in the
cylinder and switches off when the reverse conditions apply. As long
as the water in the hot water cylinder is at the required
temperature, your existing boiler will not switch on.
In
the UK, solar water heating systems for the home are designed to
work in conjunction with another water heating system, such as a
gas, oil or wood boiler. It is
possible to use solar to supply some low-grade heat for an
under-floor heating system but other heat input will be required.
This is certainly true if you have radiators or some combination of
radiators and underfloor heating.
An
average household SWH system will provide almost all your hot water over
the summer. Through the rest of the year it will pre-heat the water
which will then be brought up to temperature by the conventional hot
water system. Over the course of a whole year most solar panels
should provide around 60% of the total energy used by your hot
water system.

*Cylinder
and system sizing
can only be a rough guide. It depends on whether residents are
in or out most of the day, prefer a shower to a bath, use a washing
machine regularly and so on. A Residential Nursing Home has a very
different water use pattern compared to a 2-person household where
both people are out at work all day!
