Rutland Furlmatic 1803 Land-based Windcharger
The latest
FM1803-2 Furlmatic Windcharger is a powerful battery charging
turbine for use on land based applications. The 1.8m diameter
turbine is in it’s third generation since it’s launch in 1988. The
latest version introduced in May 2007, brings back a 3 bladed
turbine for smoother operation. It retains the efficient 3 phase
generator with AC output which is converted to DC at the controller
located next to the battery bank. The controller which is supplied
with the FM1803-2 Furlmatic is available in 12V or 24V as standard.
The original FM1803 model launched in 1998 and it’s predecessor the
FM1800 have established a proven track record of reliability in a
variety of applications from the cold, harsh environment of
Antarctica to the hot, dusty climate of the Sahara Desert. The
second generation product upgrade saw a 40% power increase and now
new aerodynamic styling combines with our latest digital display
controller. The electronic MPC1 Controller, included with the
turbine, optimises the turbine power output by matching power ratios
with windspeed. As with all Rutland wind turbines the FM1803-2
maintains the robustness required of a wind generator designed to
withstand the forces of a gale!
Suitable applications include off-grid homes, telemetry stations,
telecom sites, radio/tv transmitter stations, rural clinics for
refrigeration and lighting, meteorological stations, security
systems, navigation aids based on land or stable platforms only,
portable power for expeditions and military field applications, etc.
Whatever the application you’ll find using the FM1803-2 is
convenient, reliable and cost effective. It can be used alone or in
conjunction with solar panels and/or a diesel generating set to
create your own stand-alone power system free of costly grid
installation and on-going costs.
Use on land based applications where windspeeds are frequently high and sustained over long periods.
| · Starts charging at 3m/s
(6-7mph) |
|
· Generates 36W @ 5m/s
(11mph), 340W@ 10m/s & up to 750W peak |
| · The MPC1 Controller
included with the FM1803-2 should be located next to the
battery bank. It provides a number of functions including
overcharge protection, a manual stall switch and digital
display of battery volts, power output and modes of operation.
An important feature of the MPC1 is it's tranformer &
rectifier system that converts the wind turbine's AC power to
DC. This enables the turbine to be located at a long distance
if necessary for optimum turbine siting. |
|
· AC voltage is transmitted
from the turbine to the controller allowing optimum siting of
the windcharger whilst minimising voltage losses
|
| · Latest 3-phase alternator
design
|
| · The latest injection
moulding techniques are now used to make our blades in a
precise and uniform mould so critically the blades are very
finely balanced. The glass reinforced blades are light in
weight and overall the 3 bladed version has less tower top
weight than the previous 2 bladed model. |
| · Automatic furling tail
system activates at 15m/s (33mph/53kph) to mechanically
protect the turbine and reduce stresses on the wind generator
and tower. The turbine is “furled” away from the main wind
direction to 90º thereby slowing the turbine in excessive
winds |
|
· Built in slipring & low
wear brushes give the unit complete 360º free rotation on the
mounting pole |
| · Brushless alternator
requires no maintenance |
|
· The alternator’s windings
and magnets are encapsulated in glass fibre
|
|
· Sealed for life bearings
|
| · Controller available in
12v or 24v, windcharger unit is identical for both |
| · Designed to
mount on 81mm internal diameter tube. For details see below
|
| · No radiated interference -
complies with EEC Directive BS EN 89/336/EEC |

HRSi
controller
- HRSi voltage
controller/regulator for the Rutland 913 & Rutland FM910-3
- now allows up
to 160W of solar PV panels in a single, easy-to-install
device.
- Note: solar panels must be fitted with diodes.
- Has PWM (pulse width modulation) to prevent battery overcharge.
As peak voltages are reached the HRSi tapers the input charge from
the wind and solar chargers, gradually reducing input to float stage
level in the batteries. This feature gradually reduces the speed of
the turbine to an eventual ''idle'' thus extending the working life
of the windcharger. As the battery discharges the wind turbine
responds by increasing speed to deliver more power. Solar power is
also tapered in the same way.
- LED indicators keep the user informed about battery charging
levels and charging status.
- Manual shutdown switch allows the user to stop the wind and
solar chargers from delivering power to the battery if required.
- Automatic voltage detection 12 or 24V. Note : batteries must be
connected first for auto-detection.
- Built-in charge fuse protects the wiring circuit in the event of
accidental reverse polarity connection.

Use with Rutland
504, 913 or FM-910-3 Windchargers.
| The PWM electronic
charge regulator tapers charge to the battery by gradually
limiting windcharger current to avoid battery overcharge.
When regulating the Windcharger turbine speed is reduced
finally to an idle and as fully charged batteries are more
likely to occur in high winds this slow mode of operation
is safer and reduces wear. |
|
Built-in charge splitter to facilitate
charging 2 separate sets of batteries. |
| 5 Position switch for
LCD display of: Windcharger current, Solar panel current,
Net charge current to battery, Battery Voltage 1 & Battery
Voltage 2. |
|
Charge source shutdown switch – when
switched will stop the windcharger from running and solar
panel from generating power. NB. This should only be
activated in low wind conditions or by slowing the turbine
to an idle first. |
|
A solar panel with a maximum rating up to
100W may be connected in parallel with the windcharger via
a built in terminal. NB. a blocking diode must be fitted
to the solar panel to prevent it from drawing current from
the windcharger. |
|
Access panel to terminals for any one
Rutland Windcharger model 913, 910-3 or 503, solar panel,
battery bank 1 and battery bank 2. |

Built-in blocking diode protects the HRDX
Controller from other charge sources to the same
batteries, eg engine charging |

Balance of System Components
Suitable applications include off-grid homes, telemetry
stations, telecom sites, radio/tv transmitter stations, rural
clinics for refrigeration and lighting, meteorological stations,
security systems, navigation aids, portable power for
expeditions and military field applications, etc.
We recommend deep cycle lead acid batteries, sealed or
non-sealed.
Cable thickness depends on the overall length used between the
windcharger and regulator/battery. For distances up to 20m a
cable thickness of 2.5mm is recommended. The regulator should
always be positioned within a 1.5m cable run from the battery to
minimise voltage losses and ensure accuracy of voltage
regulation.
