Rutland
FM 910-3 'Furlmatic' Land-based Windcharger
The FM910-3 incorporates
the latest 3-phase alternator, taken from the Rutland 913 design which delivers a further 25% more power than the original model. It retains its basic design which has been proven time and again in the harshest of environments under critical power supply requirements, e.g. seismic monitoring In Antarctica, communications for Himalayan expeditions
The Furlmatic model has a "furling" device that tilts the turbine horizontally at right angles to the prevailing wind at windspeeds above 35mph. This protects the turbine from the forces of excessive winds and reduces stresses on the turbine and tower.
Wherever there is a site that is unattended, remote and exposed the FM910-3 can be relied on. Professional applications such as monitoring, telemetry, communications, isolated agricultural uses, navigation aids, military field applications, rural street lighting, remote homes and many more.

· Increased power achieved through the 3
phase alternator, 80% more power than the original model! |
|
· Tail boom and swivel materials now in
stainless steel for greater durability |
|
· Thermostatic alternator protection now
operates to slow the turbine down in prolonged high winds. |
|
· Fixing to the tower is now a spigot that
fits to an internal diameter pole of 41mm in line with the
Rutland 913 and this component is distinctively blue
anodised to prevent oxidisation with the pole. |
It retains its basic design which
has been proven time and again in the harshest of environments
under critical power supply requirements eg. seismic monitoring
in Antarctica, communications for Himalayan expeditions.

Technical Features and
Benefits
- Efficient power conversion
- Rutland Windchargers generate greater ampere hours in real
wind conditions than turbines of equal and often larger
diameter! This is because our unique high inertia alternator
designs maintain momentum between gusts unlike other designs
that stall and have to rebuild up speed. This Rutland
“flywheel” action results in more free power generated into
your battery.
- Rutland Windchargers are the lowest cost per watt of power
generated owing to our many in-house manufacturing
efficiencies and volume of production for our worldwide
customers More ampere hours are generated because of the
Rutlands’ low wind speeds start up (of just 2.6 m/s) so
power is being generated in the most typical wind speeds as
well as being powerful in the strong winds
- Automatic ‘furling’ tail fin directs turbine out of wind
above 16 m/s for gale protection
- Our low friction 3 phase alternators give a smooth and
silent output
- Computer designed efficient aerofoil blades.
- The fine profile blades have a positive one-way-only fit
that have been tested to withstand a loading with a safety
factor 10 times the turbine’s maximum rpm.
- EEC directive 89/336/EEC compliance ensures no radiated
interference
- Automatic thermostat protection in prolonged gales
- Modern, durable materials for excellent reliability and
product longevity, typically more than 10 years

Balance of System Components
HRSi controller
- HRSi voltage
controller/regulator for the Rutland 913 & Rutland FM910-3
- now allows up
to 160W of solar PV panels in a single, easy-to-install
device.
- Note: solar panels must be fitted with diodes.
- Has PWM (pulse width modulation) to prevent battery overcharge.
As peak voltages are reached the HRSi tapers the input charge from
the wind and solar chargers, gradually reducing input to float stage
level in the batteries. This feature gradually reduces the speed of
the turbine to an eventual ''idle'' thus extending the working life
of the windcharger. As the battery discharges the wind turbine
responds by increasing speed to deliver more power. Solar power is
also tapered in the same way.
- LED indicators keep the user informed about battery charging
levels and charging status.
- Manual shutdown switch allows the user to stop the wind and
solar chargers from delivering power to the battery if required.
- Automatic voltage detection 12 or 24V. Note : batteries must be
connected first for auto-detection.
- Built-in charge fuse protects the wiring circuit in the event of
accidental reverse polarity connection.

Use with Rutland
504, 913 or FM-910-3 Windchargers.
- Incorporates regulator and selectable LCD display.
- Charge splitter for 2 battery banks.
- Solar panel input up to 100W (Schottky diode
required)
- Prevent battery overcharge.
- Fit between the Windcharger / solar and battery.
- All models are diode protected to allow charging from other sources to the same battery.
Balance of System Components
We recommend deep cycle lead acid batteries, sealed or non-sealed.
Contact us for details of the current range.
Cable thickness depends on the overall length used between the
windcharger and regulator/battery. For distances up to 20m a cable
thickness of 2.5mm is recommended. The regulator should always be
positioned within a 1.5m cable run from the battery to minimise
voltage losses and ensure accuracy of voltage regulation
Mounting pole for land based systems
|
Rutland 913 and Furlmatic 910-3 Windcharger |
The Rutland 913 may be used for temporary
installation on land, for example on touring caravans, rv’s or
summer season installed static
caravans. For permanent installations the Rutland Furlmatic
910-3 model is recommended.
The FM910-3 may be used for permanent or temporary
installation on land. It is not suitable for use on unstable
platforms, eg floating buoys as the furling mechanism is
affected by rolling motion. Stable platforms eg, oil rigs, are
suitable.
The Rutland 910 series Land Tower Kit and Rigging Kit provides
a 6m total height tower supplied in 3 sections with joiners. A
pole ground-spike is supplied and 4 anchors for the 8guy
ropes, turnbuckles, etc are also supplied. This tower pivots
for easy installation and lowering and is for permanent
installation! A tower can be constructed using a pole of
minimum height 6m with an internal diameter of 41mm. Guy ropes
or supports should always be used to ensure the tower is
rigid. The final height of the turbine should be determined by
the site and is discussed in the installation manuals
provided.
