    OFF GRID / REMOTE POWER SYSTEMS

Remote / off grid power systems are ideal for providing energy to rural properties, holiday homes, alternative power systems and small community power supplies. In the UK if you have no electricity on site it is often true that the electricity company want to charge a large sum to lay the grid connection to your property.

Remote power systems are installed for a range of reasons, including:

  • expensive grid connection;

  • desire to use renewable energy;

  • lower running costs;

  • desire for independence from the grid.

FIRST RULE for OFF-GRID POWER SYSTEMS : Wherever possible reduce your energy consumption.

There are 3 choices for off-grid (or backup) power systems.

   1. CUSTOM MADE SYSTEMS. Find out the electrical loads for your property and send us the information. We also need to check your solar and wind resources at the site. Having a generator (diesel or bio-diesel fuel) gives you power for larger loads and will charge batteries if not enough wind or solar resource.  See this page for links to a loads calculator.

  2. OFF THE SHELF PACKAGED SYSTEMS. The FIXED POWER SOLUTIONS are often for non-domestic applications and come with a diesel generator + fuel tank, inverter, battery pack & monitoring system. PM 15-700 (suitable for a weekend holiday home)

15kVA /63A with 5Kva inverter charger and 700Ahr battery pack/48V, 10kVA LPG generator, VE net monitoring system, control and distribution components, installation cables, manual and starter spares/accessories kit. Basic solar charge pack included.

PM 22-1005 (suitable for a modest 2 bed cottage)

22kVA /95A with 2 x 5Kva inverter chargers and 1005Ahr battery pack/48V, 15kVA diesel generator, VE net monitoring system, control and distribution components, installation cables, manual and starter spares/accessories kit. Basic solar charge pack included.

PM 30-1300 (suitable for a typical family home )

30kVA /130A with 2 x 5Kva inverter chargers and 1300Ahr battery pack/48V, 20kVA diesel generator, VE net monitoring system, control and distribution components, installation cables, manual and starter spares/accessories kit. Basic solar charge pack included.

PM 36-1300 (suitable for a typical family home with office or workshop)

36kVA /160A with 2 x 8Kva inverter chargers and 1300Ahr battery pack/48V, 20kVA diesel generator, VE net monitoring system, control and distribution components, installation cables, manual and starter spares/accessories kit. Basic solar charge pack included.

In all cases we can offer a wind and /or solar enhancement for the system.

For example:

FIT Compliant Solar PV Kit ( 3Kwp solar PV array with G83 inverter. Reduces generator dependence, improves battery charge regime. You get paid to generate and you can use it too.

FIT Compliant Wind Generator Kit (600Wp wind turbine with lattice tower and mount kit, G83 inverter , metering board, stop switch, overloads and cables.

Remote Monitoring Kit. (Interface kit for web based monitoring of battery state, system performance and status. Allows remote adjustment and partial control of system through web and SMS.

 


 3. OFF THE SHELF PACKAGED SYSTEMS without diesel generator. These can be used as backup power or UPS systems in case of power outages. Or for reducing dependence on the grid supply.

These E-Cube Mini systems are pre-wired and pre-installed in a container and ready to go when the get to site. They can also be used with Solar and Wind enhancement options.

There are five main components of an off grid system.

  • Solar panels and/or wind turbine

  • Solar panel mounting frames and kits

  • Controllers for wind & solar inputs

  • Battery bank

  • Pure Sine Wave Inverter or Inverter-charger (combi-inverter)

It goes without saying that Off-Grid systems cannot be made 100% reliable, all year round, unless a careful and detailed analysis of the required electrical load is made.

An ENERGY LOAD CALCULATION is the first step to designing a remote power (off-grid) system

 All we need is the following (but always do the calculation based on winter loads)

1. Electrical load in WATTS for each electrical appliance

2. Daily operating time of each appliance in HOURS.

3. Multiply Electrical load in WATTS for each electrical appliance by the Daily operating time in HOURS to give WATT HRS required per appliance per day. Add up all the W/Hr figures for all appliances to give Total W/hrs required by you per day.

4. You will need to state which appliances are likely to be ON AT THE SAME TIME so we can size the inverter/inverter-charger based on these maximum loads.

      Do not use renewable energy sources for:

  • cooking - microwave ovens can be used;

  • hot water - use proper solar thermal system;

  • space heaters;

  • clothes drying;

  • air-conditioning.


Fridges may be used, buy you have to be careful to use only energy efficient appliances.

NOTE: never leave appliances in standby mode

The choice between AC and DC Systems
Homes connected to the electricity grid use AC power for all appliances. For remote power systems this may not be the case as DC appliances are very efficient and using DC appliances means that an inverter is not required. DC systems do require heavier cabling and switches and the range of appliances is much smaller.

Lights
Do not use incandescent lights for lighting as they are totally hopeless and inefficient. Fluorescent lights are about four time more efficient than IL. LED are also now an option to be considered.

Fridges and Freezers
These are energy consumers on a vast scale so choose carefully. Make sure your fridge has an high efficiency rating and choose the smallest one possible to meet your needs. Use a DC fridge if you can.

Microwave ovens
These are the only ovens that should be used with a remote power system. Wood or gas stoves should be considered.

Dishwashers
Use only those that connect to both the hot and cold water systems as they use about 30% less energy than those connected to only to the cold water supply with an internal heater. Connection to the hot or cold system is decided upon by how the water is heated. If the remote power system supplies energy to heat the water then connect to the cold water supply. If water is heated by solar thermal system then connect to the hot water system.

Home Entertainment Systems
Even though TV's, hi-fi systems, videos etc are low power users they can be used for long periods of time so make sure you are energy efficient.

General Kitchen Appliances
The kitchen can be a nightmare for deciding upon which appliances to use. Think of all the appliances used: kettles, toasters, washing machines, electric knives, microwave ovens, radios, telephone - permanently switched on. A recipe for disaster. If a diesel generator is used for backup or additional power requirements then run the heavy loads in synchronization with the generator.

Appliances with electric motors that require heavy starting currents (sometimes up to 5-6 times the rated power use) should not be used with an inverter, but directly from the generator. There are inverters that are able to cope with high transient (start-up) currents and of these only use pure sine wave inverters.
