GEL BATTERIES GENERAL INFORMATION

A battery is made up of several cells, which produce electricity through a chemical-electrical process. Electricity is generated by the conversion of lead and lead oxide into lead sulphate in a battery box filled with a water/acid solution. This process is called discharging the battery. For recharging, the battery’s minus and plus terminals are connected to a battery charger, an alternator, a solar panel, etc. (i.e. a direct current source). This causes a chemical reaction, which converts the lead sulphate back into lead and lead oxide. When the battery is fully recharged, an explosive mixture called oxyhydrogen is formed. An open flame or sparks in the vicinity can therefore be extremely hazardous. With Mastervolt’s gel batteries you can eliminate this danger.


A gel battery is a ‘normal’ lead sulphuric acid battery available in the so-called semi-traction (12 Volt) and traction versions (2 Volt cells). The main difference between a gel battery and the traditional ‘wet’ battery (whether open or sealed) is a gel substance which holds the electrolyte mix. The gases that are produced during the charging process are converted to liquid within the gel battery. This so-called recombination process prevents any gases from escaping and is what makes the gel battery so suitable for use as a service battery.

The charge voltage is given at a surrounding temperature of 20ºC. Mastervolt’s charging equipment with temperature sensor follows the correct temperature curve:

• Absorption stage = 14.4/28.8V DC at 20ºC, 14.2/28.5V at 25ºC.

• Float stage = 13.8/27.6V DC at 20ºC, 13.2/26.5V at 25ºC.

If there is no 3-stage charging equipment available, the voltage must be adjusted to a level of under 14 or 28V at 20ºC.

 


There are three main categories of batteries: starter, service and 2 Volt. Each can be subdivided into low-maintenance, maintenance-free and ‘normal’ rechargeable batteries.


These batteries are designed to generate a large amount of Amperes in a short burst of 5 to 15 seconds. Once the engine of the vehicle or vessel is running, the battery is recharged by the alternator. Mastervolt recommends installing a modern semi-traction battery instead, as these are designed for starting as well as for regular energy generation. Be careful when buying a battery: maintenance-free starter batteries are often sold as maintenance-free service batteries, boasting a high amount of charge/ discharge cycles with an extremely slow discharge over a long period of time.


These batteries are intended for long-term use, in particular for regular power consumption with a discharge time span of 5 to 24 hours. This type of battery is available in open or sealed gel versions and has a life expectancy of 5 to 6 years. Expressed in cycles, the battery’s life-span is about 400 charge/ discharge cycles (in a 50% discharged state).


These have a life-span of 10 to 20 years. This heavy-duty traction version can cope with an intensive, long term state of discharge. Complete expiry of the battery shortens the traction battery’s life-span less than it does with the semi-traction versions. For daily intensive use we recommend a traction gel battery with a suitable three-stage charge system.

A gel battery requires less engine or generator running time to recharge. In a power system with an integrated inverter or Combi, it is desirable that the energy used up is recharged in a short period of time. A gel battery is constructed in such a way that it can recharge with a charge current equal to 50% of the Ah capacity. A 12V/200 Ah gel battery can therefore be charged with 100A, for example, according to the 3-stage charge characteristic recommended by Mastervolt. This reduces charging time to a minimum.


pictureNo more worrying about high temperatures in summer and low temperatures in winter, or topping up with distilled water: a gel battery does not require any maintenance whatsoever. The only proviso is that you use a good battery charger


pictureAs gel batteries discharge virtually none of their energy, there is no need to keep topping up with a battery charger. The battery will still be fully charged after half a year, although it is of course always better to have your battery permanently connected to a battery charger or solar panel.


pictureSafety comes first, and gel batteries are definitely your safest option. The so-called low-maintenance batteries release gas while recharging. These heavy electrolyte fumes can remain suspended in the air, and if they come into contact with a spark or open flame can even explode. Gel batteries, on the other hand, release virtually no gas. Neither do they leak acid when damaged or held at an angle, as the electrolyte is retained in the gel substance.
