If you prefer not to be entirely dependent on your propulsion engine or a shore connection for onboard power, Mastervolt has an extensive range of AC diesel generators for you to choose from. All are ultra-quiet, compact, easy to install and unfailingly reliable. You can use a washing machine/dryer, an air-conditioning system and any other appliances that makes life easier, including a (safer) electric cooker. At the same time, the generator recharges your batteries quickly and fully, enabling you to switch back to silent inverter power for the rest of the day.

Although you will find a wide choice of diesel and petrol generators available at different prices, most are unsuitable for use onboard a vessel:

	Petrol is dangerous for onboard use and therefore not recommended;
	Most diesel gensets are designed for use on land or in cargo ships and as a result are far too large;
	Most sets have little or no sound insulation and are therefore far too noisy;
	Many gensets are produced for a regional market and therefore lack international service, while spare parts are difficult to find. That is why buying a DC generator set can cause problems later on.

Mastervolt Whisper generators have been specially designed for the yachting sector and the professional mobile market. They are small, silent and easy to install. Crucially, Mastervolt generator sets are powered by diesel engines, which can be serviced anywhere in the world throughout their life-span.

A 3000rpm generator has a life span of at least 10,000 hours (normal use) before it needs any major overhaul, which is more than enough for use in the recreational sector. Using a generator three hours a day for three months doesn’t even add up to 270 hours a year. On the other hand a generator which operates eight hours a day all year round will need overhauling sooner.

These are generators that are wound in such a way that they do not generate single phase 230 or 120V alternating current, but rather three-phase 400V current. Three-phase current allows electric motors (e.g. compressors) to be started up more efficiently.

Mastervolt uses indirect-injected four-stroke diesel engines manufactured in Japan by Mitsubishi and Kubota. Exceptionally quiet, compact and smooth running, these high-tech engines conform to the strictest emission level requirements and are extremely environmentally friendly. The Mastervolt Whisper renders the engines suitable for marine use and the generator, mounting frame and sound shield make the package complete.

All Whisper generator sets are fitted with a synchronised alternator. This type of generator is the new standard due to its ability to produce the initial power surge required by inductive appliances such as electric motors and compressors. In addition it has precise voltage regulation and generates a good sine wave. There is no need for a large enclosure with condensers as usually found on a-synchronised generators. Mastervolt generators do not contain brushes, they regulate their own voltage and are maintenance-free.

Mastervolt 1500 rpm Whisper generators are fitted with intercooling, a system in which water from outside is pumped through a heat exchanger and injected into the exhaust. The engine itself is cooled by a coolant ensuring that no sea water comes into contact with the unit. The generator is cooled by cold air blown in via a ventilator in the sound shield.

The engine of the 3000 rpm Whisper is also indirectly cooled by (sea)water. To achieve the most effective sound insulation, it is almost completely enclosed. The only opening in the casing is for the air needed for combustion. To make all this possible the generator is also water-cooled: a cooler is integrated within the generator enclosure made of seawater-proof materials such as copper-nickel. The combustion air is also cooled to ensure optimum performance even under extreme conditions. The diagram below shows the incoming/outgoing waterflow.

Mastervolt has developed a special technique for keeping Whisper generators as compact as possible. 3000rpm units are cooled on a boat by water from outside or by an intercooling system which allows the entire set to be enclosed by a specially designed polyester sound shield with an insulation layer. This offers drastic reductions in the noise level (expressed in decibels). A unique watercooled exhaust system keeps both exhaust temperatures and noise levels low. In order to save space, all services are connected outside the sound shield as much as possible. 1500 rpm units are powered by water-cooled diesel engines and a fan-cooled alternator section.

Optional is keel cooling for boats and radiator cooling for vehicles. The 3000/3600 rpm units have a dual cooling system. For both engine and alternator a separate radiator or keel cooler has to be applied. The radiators are a loose supply to be bottom, side or roof mounted. For this applications a complete installation kit is available. Keel cooler kits for steel boats are available as well.

All Whisper generator sets are mounted on rubber mountings into a super damped sound shield canopy. This canopy is solid, very effective and also good looking. Installation is prepared and all fittings are on the side for easy connections. For the smaller units Mastervolt supplies a heavy base plate to absorb vibrations. This base plate could be applied in case of a very light construction of the boat and in vehicles to prevent resonance. As an option the smaller 1500-rpm generators can be supplied with a ‘economy class’ sound shield that is delivered as a ‘do-it-yourself kit’ with loose panels. However this canopy is less effective than the Whisper canopy. For the larger generators a custom made canopy can be offered upon request.
